Paddle for Promise

June 22, 2019

Join us for a paddle on the river!

Join us for a whole new Paddle for Promise as we bring back a classic event on the Delaware: the circumnavigation of Petty’s Island.  The two hour paddle will start and end at Wiggins Marina in Camden.  Fifty fundraising paddlers will paddle in five-25’ voyageur canoes. We are bringing back this once historic event circling the island that will soon be a nature preserve and highlight the Back Channel and the confluence of the Cooper and Delaware Rivers where UrbanPromise youth lead paddling tours throughout the summer.

This year, we're paddling so that UrbanPromise can reach thousands of children and youth through high impact programming throughout the year!

With your support, we will:

  • engage over 200 Camden residents in on the water recreation through eight RiverGuides hired for summer employment through funding from the William Penn Foundation
  • provide boatbuilding programming for 100+ middle and high school students throughout the year
  • lead experiential learning programs and expeditions for 100+ teens throughout the year
  • provide environmental and watershed education for Camden youth and the community throughout the year through water quality testing, educational excursions, hands-on learning and on-the-water adventures

We are looking for paddlers who are up for an adventure to create teams of two or more to compete in the fundraising goal and take home the Paddle for Promise trophy for the top fundraising team.  There is a registration fee and we ask each paddler whether paddling as an individual or on a team to raise a minimum of $500.00--ask your friends, family, or church to support you in your trek around Petty's Island!

UrbanPromise will provide all logistical support for the event.  Paddlers must be able to: swim well, be comfortable on the water, paddle for two hours with no breaks at a moderate quick pace, and be able to climb in and out of the boats. People with range of motion limitations or lasting injuries (ex. bad back) should not participate.
